Ekaterina Tudegesheva (RUS) and Roland Fischnaller (ITA) have won the 2013 FIS Snowboard World Cup season's second parallel giant slalom in Rogla, Slovenia, today thus proving their currently outstanding form.
Facing blue bird sky at the World Cup host debut of the ski resort south of Maribor the reigning Parallel Slalom World champion from Tashtagol edged off 2010 PGS Olympic Champion Nicolien Sauerbreij (NED) in the women's finals.
“I have a very good form right now and I'm happy that I was able to clinch my season's first World Cup victory,” said Tudegesheva, who took over the lead in the Parallel World Cup ranking with 1,930 points after her career's eleventh World Cup win.
And also second ranked Nicolien Sauerbreij was all smiles after the race.
Not only because she broke an almost three years lasting streak without a podium result (last was 1st rank in Valmalenco, Italy, 2010) but also because she finally seems to be back where she was before.
“I'm very pleased bearing in mind that I am still slowly coming back from an operation last October.
Today, it was perfect, it was the first time I was able to put it all together in competition, not just in training.”
In the battle for third, Claudia Riegler (AUT) crossed the finish line ahead of Caroline Calve (CAN).
Fischnaller gets redemption for World Champs
On the men's side of things, Fischnaller, who brought home Bronze and Silver form the last World Championships, celebrated his career's eighth on the “Jasa” slope by beating Zan Kosir (SLO) in the final duel.
The South Tyrolean racer thus delivered on a threat he had postulated after the parallel slalom event at the World Champs last January.
The 32 years-old had announced that “I hope that I can have some revenge in Rogla.”
In Stoneham, Rogla local hero Rok Marguc (SLO) had dominated the course set by Fischnaller's coach Erich Pramsohler.
“I'm very, very happy especially as it is my fifth podium in six races. I came here with the will to win. And it's nice if you achieve your goal.
The conditions as well as the course were perfect for me. In addition, I'm also more experienced. But in the end, this makes it sometimes even harder to put it all together. But it shows my current form.”
And right now, it seems that the new Parallel World Cup leader (3,100 points) will remain the one to beat on the parallel slopes; although it was tight in the finals as runner-up Zan Kosir summed up:
“I had my chance in the finals. It was tight all the way but in the end, he (Roland Fischnaller) was the best.”
Sylvain Dufour (FRA) rounded out the podium as third after he had had the whip hand over Ingemar Walder (AUT) in the small finals.
