Some slopestyle facts and figures

The guys from Infrostrada Sports were so kind to send over some nice background information on the first event which takes place at the 10th FIS Snowboard World Championships in Stoneham and Quebec City, Canada, from January 17th till 27th.

So, check out some facts and figures on slopestyle.

Men’s Slopestyle

> This event will be held for the second time at the WChs. This makes Slopestyle the most recently added event. Slopestyle will make its Olympic Games debut at Sochi 2014.

> In the first edition (in 2011), Seppe Smits (BEL) took gold, Niklas Mattsson (SWE) silver and Ville Paumola (FIN) bronze.

> In the 2011 Slopestyle competition, Smits claimed the first ever gold medal for Belgium at the WChs (men or women). He took silver medals at Big Air in 2009 and 2011.

> Smits could become the youngest ever male snowboarder to win four medals at the WChs. On January 18, he will be 21 years and 190 days, exactly 120 days younger than the current record holder Antti Autti (FIN) was when he claimed his fourth WChs medal.

> In the history of men’s Slopestyle, there have been only five individual World Cup events. These were won by Chas Guldemond (USA), Dimi de Jong (NED), Aleksey Sobolev (RUS), Clemens Schattschneider (AUT) and Mark McMorris (CAN).

> The only Slopestyle World Cup event this season so far was won by Chas Guldemond, at Copper Mountain (USA) on January 12, 2013.

Women’s Slopestyle

> This event will be held for the second time at the WChs. This makes Slopestyle the most recently added event. Slopestyle will make its Olympic Games debut at Sochi 2014.

> Enni Rukajärvi (FIN) won the first ever Slopestyle competition at WChs in 2011. Sárka Pancochová (CZE) took silver, Shelly Gotlieb (NZL) bronze.

> The only World Cup Slopestyle event this season was won by Jamie Anderson (USA), at Copper Mountain (USA) on January 12, 2013.

> This will be the 40th event in women’s WChs history. The first ever event, Halfpipe in 1996, was won by Carolien van Kilsdonk (NED).
