VENUE DESCRIPTIONCypress Mountain is located in Cypress Provincial Park, adjacent to the District of West Vancouver. The mountain is served by an excellent highway and offers spectacular views of Vancouver and its harbour.
As Cypress Mountain is only a 30-minute drive from downtown Vancouver, it's no wonder that the winter resort will continue to be one of the most popular areas in British Columbia for snowboarding and skiing as well as cross country and snow tubing after the 2010 Winter Games. Another reason for the outstanding role of this venue is the fact that it has the most vertical drop, most terrain and most lifts on Vancouver's North Shore.
Due to this, White Industries Ltd. led by professional course builder Jeff Ihaksi , who also was responsible for the 2006 Torino course, was able to prepare a snowboard cross course with a length of 1,135 metres and a vertical drop of 208 metres.
The finish of the course which is also shared by the parallel giant slalom slope a few days later is located right next to the superpipe built and shaped by Arena Snowparks, led by Steve Petrie.
As Vancouver witnessed one of the hottest Januaries ever and a lot of rain poured down before the Games, organisers were forced to built the halfpipe and snowboard cross course with straw bales which will be covered by real snow brought down to the slopes from higher located reservoirs (view image). So, organisers were and are more than confident to host great competitions on world class slopes and course which are maintained by a total of 510 volunteers during the Games.
